Hazard Identification & Risk Management
Proactive Safety Leadership for High-Reliability Operations
Hazard Identification & Risk Management
Recognise the threat. Trap the error. Mitigate the risk.
In high-reliability environments, safety is not the absence of accidents, but the presence of robust defenses. The Global Air Training Hazard Identification and Risk Management course is a comprehensive 1-day programme designed to turn every member of your workforce into an active safety participant.
This interactive training focuses on developing the practical skills and psychological insights needed to identify and manage hazards before they contribute to unsafe operations. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the "Avoid, Trap, and Mitigate" framework to protect people, assets, and operational integrity.
Mastering the Science of Hazard Identification
Unlike generic safety briefings, our programme uses a facilitative approach to encourage collaborative input and discussion. We utilise real-world industry examples and case studies to ensure the training is grounded in the operational reality of your sector.
Core Learning Objectives
- The TEM Framework: Learn the Threat and Error Management (TEM) concept to systematically identify external threats and internal errors.
- Defining Operational Threats: Gain the ability to define specific threats within your unique operational environment.
- Active Threat Management: Master the tools required to manage threats and break the "error chain" before an incident occurs.
- Risk-Based Decision Making: Understand the decision-making process and how to avoid the psychological "traps" that lead to poor risk assessment.
- Effective Intervention: Develop the communication skills needed to intervene safely when a hazard is identified, utilizing the PACE model for graded assertiveness.

Course Programme: Hazard Identification & Risk Management
1-Day High-Reliability Training
This syllabus is designed to transform theoretical risk assessment into a practical, live operational tool. The modules focus on identifying threats and managing the "Error Chain" through every phase of a task.
Syllabus Overview
- Operational Hazards: Identifying specific threats within your unique working environment, including Significant Injury or Fatality (SIF) hazards. We examine the multi-layered outcomes of risk on individuals, teams, the public, and the organisation.
- Leadership Responsibilities: Defining the critical roles and accountability structures required for effective hazard identification. This module focuses on "Safety Leadership"—the transition from passive compliance to active accountability.
- The Risk Mindset: Developing a robust safety culture. We explore the psychology of risk normalisation—the dangerous process where teams become desensitised to hazards over time.
- Managing Dynamic Risk: Strategies for managing hazards in real-time. This covers pre-job planning, re-planning during active operations, and managing the risks introduced by changes to personnel, the environment, or the task itself.
- Effective Communication & Briefings: Mastering structured job briefings to eliminate the "Assumption/Expectancy Trap"—where team members hear what they expect to hear rather than what is actually said.
- Human Error and Reliability: An in-depth overview of error management and human vulnerability. We analyse the factors that affect our reliability and the psychological reasons why personnel may deviate from Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or protocols.
- Active Monitoring: Developing peer-monitoring skills to identify errors early. This module addresses the impact of distractions and provides techniques for promoting effective, high-vigilance monitoring.
- Intervention & The PACE Model: Learning when and how to intervene using assertive communication tools. We address the challenges of the "Authority Gradient" and hierarchy, providing a structured intervention model to ensure safety stops are effective.
- Integrated Case Studies: Analysis of real-world industry incidents to demonstrate the consequences of failed hazard identification and the success of proactive risk management.
